We had a tornado pass through Northwest Arkansas very early this morning. Springdale, the town just north of me, took the worst of the damage. But not until I arrived at work did I see that there was also some serious wreckage in North Fayetteville, less than three miles away from my home.
I slept through the whole thing.
Seriously. I didn’t hear a sound, aside from a little rain. It’s kind of crazy. The national weather service was even late to catch on with this one, and it sounds like it basically took everyone by surprise this morning.
The moment I sat down and logged in at work, I started banging out stories related to it. An elementary school saw their gym destroyed. Businesses and organizations immediately stepped up and started offering assistance to people. The mayor announced that, miraculously, it seemed that nobody was killed and that everyone in Springdale was accounted for. The county declared a state of emergency. The governor chimed in.
Type-type-typey-type-type. It was a blur of articles. And I don’t mind days like that at all.
No child molesters or predators for a change. I’ll take it. I just hope everyone is okay, and I’m sure I’ll be covering the fallout from this storm. But it was really encouraging to see how quickly lots of people stepped up to help out people in need.
