At first, I really didn’t want to write this particular story at work.
Our news director will often send an email to the entire newsroom, asking if we have covered a certain story or suggesting that we do so. This recently happened with a story involving Hunter Biden, the President’s son.
My knee-jerk reaction was “I really don’t want to do this.” I knew almost nothing about Hunter Biden, and my negative reaction was based almost entirely on a certain segment of the population that seems to invoke “BUT WHAT ABOUT HUNTER BIDEN’S LAPTOP?!?” as a rallying cry, an outright aspect of their political personality, or both. My thought process in this case was: He’s not a lawmaker or an elected official. He’s not from Northwest Arkansas. Is he at all newsworthy for our station?
But I wrote the story. And I’m glad I did.
