I’ll be back in a courthouse on Monday morning for jury selection in a capital murder trial. I’ve mentioned this one here before, and it’s a doozy. It all happened before my time at the station, but I have gotten up to speed on it by reporting on all the pretrial filings leading up to this third trial in the case.
That’s right. Forget double jeopardy. Due to a wild set of circumstances, this will be trial #3 for Mauricio Torres on charges that he raped and murdered his son. The first verdict was overturned on a technicality due to sentencing issues and the second ended with another guilty verdict and proceeded all the way to the sentencing phase before Torres’ stepson jumped out of the witness box and tried to attack him in court, resulting in a mistrial.
So…here we go again.
