First off, thanks to everyone for the kindness and the lovely words about my sweet boy Jake. I know that “RIP my incredible pet” posts of any kind can come off as really self-indulgent, and in a way I guess this one was too. None of you knew him. But just writing about it helped me deal with it, and I thought that a different type of content like that was okay to post here for a change.
Today is another one that’s not like most of what I write. I understand that most of you came here due to my Duggar content, but apart from what I have written about at work, there just has not been much to report or comment on lately. I’ve lost quite a few subscribers over it, and I completely get it. There have been four delays or extensions since his conviction. They all seem to be fairly standard. There are some sealed documents that I would love to get a look it and report on, including a victim’s statement, but clearly the court did not release them for a reason.
So, today I’m going to give a couple of shoutouts to co-workers of mine. I truly love my job, and the people I work with are a huge part of that. Most jobs almost always have a few assholes. You know them. Those people that just suck, that love to be the turd in the punch bowl, that seem like they are hell-bent on making your days worse. They are not uncommon. There is nobody like that here. Not even close. I don’t dread going to work in the morning. I’m not clock-watching all day, just counting the minutes until I can get the hell out of there.
I actually like my job. It’s a wonderful feeling and I’m so grateful for it.
Kayla Davis started with us earlier this year. She literally just graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Like…a few months ago. Due to some circumstances at the station, she got thrown right into the fire, appearing on air way before it was expected of her. Well…she has absolutely killed it. She recently did a package on a diehard Arkansas Razorbacks student/basketball fan that really wanted to go to the current round of tournament games, but he couldn’t afford it…because he is blind, and his father goes to all the games with him to provide play-by-play for him. Thanks to Kayla’s story, kind viewers funded a trip for both of them by literally the next day. National outlets have picked up her awesome story, including the early Today Show.
This couldn’t happen to a nicer, kinder, more deserving person. No matter how busy or stressed she gets, she always gets the job done with a smile on her face.
Next up is Jacob Smith. A part of the digital team with me, Jacob is another youngster that started very shortly after I did last fall. He works the dayside shift, meaning he’s at the station at the ungodly hour of 5:30 AM. We cover a lot of the same type of stories sometimes, and on more than one occasion, I have found something that I think will make for an interesting article only to discover that Jacob has already banged it out. He’s like a ninja. He’s absolutely not a loud, obnoxious, in-your-face kind of guy.
Which means that I was absolutely delighted when I learned that he got called into on-camera duty for our Good Day NWA show to help them break down a tourney-style bracket of Oscar nominees. Jacob is a diehard movie buff—wildly knowledgable about film, and he has seen all the awards contenders. I likened his KNWA debut to when NBC brings in Steve Kornacki for some expert analysis.
To nobody’s surprise, he was fantastic:
Me, I have to practice what I’m going to say when I call in a takeout order, but Jacob just jumps right into the show like it’s nothing. I hope it becomes a recurring feature.
I could write like this about a multitude of other people I work with. Maybe I will, because I am lucky to get to work with all of them every day.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone.
